For many people, nothing beats lounging around in the backyard on the Fourth of July with friends and families; including our furry friends. While it may seem like fun to include our pets in the festivities, in reality some of the food and activities can be potentially hazardous to them. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center offers the following tips to keep you pets safe during the holiday:
-Never leave alcoholic drinks unattended where pets can reach them. Alcoholic beverages, a lot or a sip, have the potential to poison pets.
-Do not apply sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet that is not labeled specifically for use on animals. Misuse of repellents that contains DEET can lead to neurological problems.
-Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of your pets' reach. Matches can potentially damage blood cells if ingested and lighter fluid is not only irritating to the skin but if inhaled, breathing problems can develop rapidly.
-Keep your pets on a normal diet. There are many people foods that are harmful to pets so try and refrain from throwing your cook out scraps out for your pets. And keep in mind that foods such as onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes, raisins, salt and yeast dough is toxic to companion animals.
-Do not put glow jewelry on your pets or allow them to play with glow toys. While the luminescent substance contained in these products is not toxic, it still leads to gastrointestinal irritation and intestinal blockage could occur from swallowing these products.
-Never use fireworks around pets!! Exposure to lit fireworks can potentially result in severe burns and/or trauma to curious pets. Also, loud and crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, who can become frightened or disoriented by the sound.

Please resist the urge to bring your pets along to any Independence Day festivities. Opt instead to keep them safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape proof area at your home.

July 1st is National ID Your Pet Day!
Be prepared in the event that your pet does escape by downloading the ASPCA Mobile App. You'll recieeve a missing pet recovery kit with step by step instructions on how to search for your lost pet. Always have them wear a collar with an ID tag that includes your name, current phone number and any relevant contact information.
